Preschool Assessment and Development Unit (PSADU)
The function of the unit is to provide assessment and treatment for pre-school children who have specific language and communication difficulties. A few children with more general development difficulties may also be assessed. The children are seen over a period of time and given an intensive individual programme.

The work of the unit is carried out by a multi-disciplinary team comprising of teacher, speech and language therapist, nursery nurse, educational psychologist and special needs auxiliary. The educational audiologist and community paediatrician can also be involved.

All children attending the Unit are expected also to have a place in their local nursery. Children will initially be admitted to an assessment group for a period of six consecutive Monday mornings. At the end of this period, there is a meeting with parents to discuss the assessment, after which, recommendations are made.

Parents and staff from the children's local nursery will be invited into the unit periodically to observe the ongoing work, as well as termly parents' evenings. Good communication with parents and nurseries is seen as crucial.

When the time for school entry approaches, the local school is invited to attend a review meeting and can also come in to observe.

Referrals to the unit come via speech and language therapists and educational psychologists. Due to the high number of referrals there is almost always a waiting list for places.

The majority of the children go on to their local mainstream primary school. A few require the help of a specialist provision.
